Scheduled for a grand global unveiling on August 15 in South Africa, the teaser not only confirms previous speculations but also hints at Mahindra’s ambitious strides into the electric vehicle (EV) segment.

Here’s what we know so far:

The global debut of the Thar.e concept is set to take place in South Africa, a significant move for the brand to introduce its innovation on a global platform.
The design language promises a fusion of modern and retro aesthetics. Squircle-shaped LED lights with pixel structures will make an appearance, a style trait it seems to share with Mahindra’s new pickup concept, which is also set to make its first appearance.

The words ‘Born Electric’ prominently featured in the teaser is more than just a tagline. It’s a revelation.

This indicates Mahindra’s commitment to a new dedicated EV platform they are currently working on.

Drawing parallels from the industry, while electrifying a ladder-frame platform – such as the one in the popular Ford F150 Lightning pickup – isn’t unheard of, Mahindra’s decision to employ its newly developed electric platform for the Thar.e is commendable.

It signifies the brand’s forward-thinking approach to EV tech, sidestepping the inherent challenges posed by the current Thar’s ladder-frame, such as weight and space constraints. This strategic decision will likely translate to an optimized Thar.e, boasting a lighter frame, maximized battery storage, and potentially an impressive range.

With Mahindra’s storied history in commercial vehicle manufacturing, this move into electric off-roaders suggests an expansion of their electric horizon. Yet, as the world eagerly anticipates the big reveal, specifics regarding the Thar.e’s range and powertrain remain shrouded in mystery.

The countdown to August 15 has begun, as Mahindra is poised to accelerate into the future of electric mobility. Stay with us as we bring you the latest updates from this electric revelation.

Unveiling the First Born-EV Maruti SUV

The first born-EV Maruti SUV, based on the eVX concept, is scheduled to roll out from the Gujarat plant by 2025, marking a significant milestone in Maruti’s evolution.

Plant Takeover and Strategic Partnership

The plant takeover has been sanctioned by the board of directors of both companies. The transfer will be executed subject to all legal and regulatory compliances, including approval from minority shareholders, according to the statement released by the companies.

Production and Efficiency

Gujarat plant to be Maruti’s first EV manufacturing base

The plant currently produces around 7.5 lakh cars annually

Future Growth and Challenges

With the growth of the Indian car market and the potential for export, MSIL plans to raise its production capacity to about 4 million cars per annum by 2030-’31. Managing the scale and complexity of various powertrain technologies like EVs, hybrids, CNGs, ethanol will present challenges, according to MSIL.

New Facility and Future Projects

The new facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana is expected to increase India’s share of Suzuki’s global production capacity to 68-70 percent. This facility will also witness the production of a seven-seat SUV based on the Grand Vitara.

The Revuelto marks a significant milestone in Lamborghini’s history as it debuts the company’s first-ever hybrid V12 powerplant. The blend of tradition and innovation has been the key to the car’s resounding success. With customers and the public embracing hybridization, Lamborghini’s engineers had the challenging task of justifying the retention of the iconic V12 motor amidst the industry’s move towards downsizing and turbocharging.

However, the decision to keep the V12 was not without merit. Maurizio Reggiani, the former chief technical officer, led the early development of the Revuelto and revealed that existing customers provided overwhelming support for the classic powerplant. Moreover, hybridization allowed Lamborghini to cut emissions and make the new engine 17kg lighter while delivering an impressive 825hp at 9,250rpm. When combined, the Revuelto’s power reaches a mind-boggling 1,015hp, truly elevating it to the most potent Lamborghini in the brand’s illustrious history.

The integration of hybrid technology was executed ingeniously. The battery pack, holding 3.8kWh of charge, is strategically placed in the transmission tunnel, enabling an electric-only range of approximately 9.5km. Notably, the V12 engine can recharge the battery pack via the rear motor in an astonishingly quick process, taking just six minutes. As a result, Lamborghini anticipates an overall fuel economy and CO2 emissions improvement of about 30 percent compared to its predecessor, the Aventador Ultimae.

The Revuelto’s structure boasts considerable weight savings, largely attributed to its carbon-fibre tub, which is both lighter and 40 percent stiffer than the previous generation’s. An additional breakthrough comes in the form of a composite front crash structure, a world-first in a road car. Such innovative engineering showcases Lamborghini’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive technology.

Design-wise, the Revuelto stays true to Lamborghini’s distinctive style, incorporating iconic elements that pay homage to the brand’s storied heritage. The sleek and angular lines, reminiscent of the legendary Countach, captivate the eye, while new features like the compact LED headlights positioned beneath the bonnet’s overhang and integrated radar sensors in the front grille add a modern touch.

Lamborghini enthusiasts and eager customers have eagerly awaited the Indian launch of the Revuelto. Lamborghini India secured a limited number of allocations, with the first deliveries expected around November 2023. While the official price has yet to be disclosed, the inclusion of customs duty and local taxes may elevate the on-road price to beyond Rs 10 crore, making the Revuelto the most expensive Lamborghini ever.

In conclusion, the Lamborghini Revuelto is a magnificent fusion of heritage and vision, exemplifying the brand’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of performance and sustainability. With its futuristic hybrid V12 powerplant, innovative engineering, and iconic design, the Revuelto has rightfully secured its place as an unprecedented and highly sought-after masterpiece in the automotive world. The roaring success of this groundbreaking supercar is a testament to Lamborghini’s unwavering dedication to delivering automotive excellence.

In a significant stride towards sustainability, the Goa government has made a momentous announcement that is set to reshape the state’s transport landscape. Starting January 2024, all new rental cars and bikes in Goa must be electric vehicles (EVs), reinforcing the state’s commitment to combatting climate change and reducing carbon emissions. Moreover, existing fleet vehicles are not exempt from the green revolution, as they must be retrofitted with electric powertrains by June 2024.

A Pioneering Move for a Greener Goa

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant unveiled these ambitious plans during the G20 summit in Goa, while addressing the Energy Transitions Working Group Meeting. Recognizing the critical role of tourism in Goa’s economy, the government aims to address the pressing issue of traffic congestion, which has been identified as a major contributor to 40% of total carbon emissions in the state.

Chief Minister Sawant stated, “All new tourist vehicles, cab and bike rentals shall be EVs from January 2024, while new government light motor vehicles (LMVs) purchased from January 2024 will mandatorily be EVs. It will also be mandatory for permit holders having multiple tourist taxis, rent a bike and rent a cab operator to retrofit 30 percent of the fleet to EV by June 2024.”

Challenges and Commitment

While the decision is a commendable leap towards a sustainable future, it does come with its share of challenges. Goa currently lacks the robust infrastructure necessary to support a widespread EV adoption. The electric vehicle charging grid is not as extensive as in metropolitan cities, and power cuts remain a common occurrence. However, Chief Minister Sawant remains optimistic about the state’s potential for EV growth, highlighting that EV ownership has surged from 0.2 percent to 9.4 percent since the introduction of EV concessions in 2021.

Undeterred by the recent cut in FAME II subsidies by the central government, Goa is forging ahead with its own plans to introduce tailor-made incentives for electric vehicles.

A Cleaner, Greener Goa on the Horizon

Goa’s bold decision to transform its tourist vehicle fleet into an all-EV lineup reflects the state’s dedication to mitigating environmental impact and fostering a sustainable future. With the goal of having EVs contribute to 30 percent of annual vehicle registrations by 2025, Goa is positioning itself as a pioneering force in India’s journey towards a greener tomorrow. As the state takes resolute steps towards achieving this vision, all eyes are on Goa to see how this electrifying revolution unfolds.t

SAIC, the parent company of MG Motors, has recently filed a design patent for the Baojun Yep electric SUV in India, hinting at its plans to introduce the model in the country by 2025. The Baojun Yep was recently unveiled in production form in China, and now it seems that MG is preparing to bring its rebranded version to the Indian market.

The design patent indicates that the India-spec Baojun Yep, rebranded under the MG badge, will closely resemble the China-spec model, with minor changes such as MG badges at the front and rear. Similarly, the MG Comet in India closely resembles the Wuling Air EV in China, with slight differences in bumper design.

The Baojun Yep is a retro-themed all-electric SUV with a 3-door layout and four seats. It shares the Global Small Electric Vehicle platform (GSEV) with the MG Comet EV. The exterior features square LED headlights, a rugged-looking front bumper, plastic cladding on the lower body, roof rails, prominent wheel arches, and a simple rear design. Like the Comet, the Yep also has an asymmetrical window design, and the China-spec model offers an optional LCD screen on the tailgate for personalized messages.

In terms of dimensions, the Baojun Yep measures 3,381mm in length, 1,685mm in width, 1,721mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,110mm. Compared to the Comet, the Yep is slightly larger, being 407mm longer, 180mm wider, and 81mm taller, with a wheelbase that is 100mm longer.

The Yep is powered by a single electric motor on the rear axle, producing 68hp and 140Nm of torque, with a top speed limited to 100kph. Its power comes from a 28.1kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery that offers a range of up to 303km (CLTC). It is expected that the battery specifications may vary for the India-spec model, as the battery pack is likely to be locally sourced, similar to the Comet EV.

The launch of the Baojun Yep in India is planned after MG India’s second round of investment, financing the second plant in Halol, Gujarat. It is expected to be introduced in India around 2025, potentially competing against models like the Citroen eC3. While the official name of the compact electric SUV for the Indian market is not yet known, it is likely to be priced at a premium over the Comet EV. The company’s efforts in localizing production with the Comet EV may result in competitive pricing for the Baojun Yep in India.

The automotive industry is undergoing a transformative shift as electric vehicles (EVs) gain traction as a viable alternative to traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. This comparative analysis explores the key differences between EVs and ICE vehicles in various aspects, shedding light on their environmental impact, performance, cost, and overall suitability for the future of transportation.

Environmental Impact

EVs: One of the primary advantages of EVs is their significantly lower carbon footprint. They produce zero tailpipe emissions, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. However, it’s essential to consider the environmental impact of electricity generation for charging EVs, as it heavily depends on the energy sources used by the grid.

ICE Vehicles: ICE vehicles rely on fossil fuels, such as gasoline or diesel, for propulsion, leading to emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. These emissions contribute to air pollution and climate change, making them less environmentally friendly compared to EVs.

Performance

EVs: Electric vehicles offer instant torque, providing quick acceleration and smooth, silent operation. Their regenerative braking system helps recover energy during deceleration, enhancing overall efficiency and range.

ICE Vehicles: ICE vehicles have a long history of refinement, offering a wide variety of engine types and performance levels. While some high-performance ICE vehicles can match EVs in acceleration, they cannot match the instant torque delivery and quietness of electric motors.

Range and Charging

EVs: Range anxiety, the fear of running out of charge, was a concern in the early days of EVs. However, advancements in battery technology have significantly improved EV ranges. Moreover, the growing network of charging stations makes it increasingly convenient to charge EVs on the go.

ICE Vehicles: ICE vehicles have the advantage of an extensive refueling infrastructure, allowing drivers to quickly fill up their tanks at gas stations. They offer longer driving ranges without the need for frequent refueling stops.

Cost of Ownership

EVs: While the upfront cost of purchasing an EV can be higher than an ICE vehicle, EVs tend to have lower operating and maintenance costs. They require less maintenance due to the simplicity of electric motors and fewer moving parts. Additionally, incentives and rebates in some regions can help offset the initial purchase price.

ICE Vehicles: ICE vehicles generally have a lower upfront cost, but their ongoing maintenance expenses can be higher due to the complexity of internal combustion engines and the need for regular oil changes and other maintenance tasks.

Infrastructure and Adoption

EVs: The charging infrastructure for EVs is continuously expanding, with more charging stations being installed globally. Governments and businesses are investing heavily in EV charging networks to encourage adoption.

ICE Vehicles: Gas stations are prevalent in most regions, making it easy to find refueling points for ICE vehicles. However, the reliance on fossil fuels raises concerns about energy security and environmental sustainability.

Conclusion

The comparison between electric vehicles (EVs) and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles reveals that EVs offer significant environmental benefits, lower operating costs, and a smoother driving experience. However, ICE vehicles still hold advantages in terms of longer driving ranges and an established refueling infrastructure. As battery technology improves and charging infrastructure continues to expand, EVs are likely to become even more competitive and appealing to a broader range of consumers. The transition to a sustainable and electrified transportation system is underway, and both EVs and ICE vehicles will coexist in the automotive landscape for some time. The choice between the two depends on individual preferences, driving habits, and considerations for environmental impact.

Tata Group, the parent company of Tata Motors and Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), has announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art battery factory for electric vehicles (EVs) in the United Kingdom. The group, which already manufactures luxury cars and SUVs through JLR in the UK, will invest over £4 billion (approximately Rs 42,000 crore) in setting up the battery plant.

The new EV battery factory will have an impressive capacity of 40GW, surpassing the 38GW battery factory proposed by the Shanghai-based Envision Group near Nissan’s plant in Sunderland, UK. The Faraday Institute has estimated that the UK requires a total local capacity of 100GWh by 2030 to meet the growing demand for EV production, which is projected to rise to 200GWh by 2040.

Although the exact location of the factory has not been officially confirmed, reports suggest that Tata has identified a site in Somerset for the plant. This choice has the potential to create around 9,000 jobs, providing a significant boost to the region’s economy.

Tata Group aims to produce sustainable battery cells and packs for various applications within the mobility and energy sectors. The plant will undergo a rapid ramp-up phase, with construction and operations expected to commence within three years. Additionally, the company plans to maximize the use of renewable energy at the battery factory, with the ultimate goal of achieving 100 percent clean power. Emphasizing sustainability, Tata also plans to recycle batteries in-house, contributing to the creation of a truly circular economy ecosystem by reclaiming raw materials for reuse in new batteries.

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who views Tata Group’s decision as a significant vote of confidence in Britain. He believes that the battery factory will not only create thousands of skilled jobs but also strengthen the country’s position in the global transition to electric vehicles and foster growth in clean industries.

The upcoming battery factory will not only supply batteries to JLR and Tata Motors but also cater to the wider market. It will produce cells using two chemistries, namely lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel manganese cobalt (NMC), with the latter designated for JLR’s use.

This move is crucial for JLR’s compliance with the stringent European ‘rule of origin’ regulations for EVs, which have been introduced following Brexit agreements. From 2024, EVs must meet a 45 percent value of origin from the EU or the UK to qualify for trade without tariffs, increasing to 65 percent in 2027.

Tata Group’s investment in the UK’s EV battery manufacturing facility marks a major step forward in advancing electric mobility, sustainable practices, and economic growth in the region.

California-based electric carmaker Fisker Inc. is set to make waves in the Indian market with the announcement of a limited edition of its highly anticipated Ocean electric SUV. Fisker is bringing the top-spec Extreme version of the Ocean SUV to India, but what sets this variant apart is its exclusivity, limited to just 100 units. The Indian model will be known as the Ocean Extreme Vigyan Edition, paying homage to Fisker’s India headquarters in Hyderabad, established in April of last year.

Anticipation has been building since January 2020 when we first reported on Fisker’s interest in bringing the Ocean SUV to India. Now, after entering production late last year, the SUV is finally making its way to the Indian market, and the Extreme version is stealing the spotlight after its unveiling this March.

The Fisker Ocean Extreme Vigyan Edition boasts impressive specifications, featuring a 113kWh battery pack and dual electric motors that generate a powerful 572hp and 737Nm of torque. With an exceptional 0-100kph sprint time of under 4 seconds and a range of 707km on a single charge according to the WLTP cycle, this model claims the highest range among SUVs currently available in Europe.

What truly sets the Ocean SUV apart is its commitment to sustainability. The vehicle showcases vegan interiors, recycled carpets made from regenerated nylon, recycled rubber in various components, and even a solar panel on the roof to enhance its range. Furthermore, the Ocean Extreme Vigyan Edition is equipped with an array of advanced features, including a 17.1-inch revolving touchscreen infotainment system, a digital rear-view mirror, a powered tailgate, a 3D surround sound system, front and rear heated seats, 360-degree cameras, and an array of ADAS features. Additionally, it offers three distinct drive modes named Earth, Fun, and Hyper, catering to various driving preferences.

Fisker aims to align the pricing of the Ocean Extreme Vigyan Edition in India with its European counterparts. In Germany, the Ocean Extreme is priced at €69,950, equivalent to approximately Rs 64.5 lakh, before factoring in import taxes and logistics. Given that it will be fully imported, prices could exceed Rs 1 crore, placing it among other luxury SUVs such as the BMW iX, Audi e-tron, and Jaguar i-Pace.

However, Fisker has expressed interest in establishing a battery and vehicle assembly plant in India, given adequate support from the government. This suggests that the brand is exploring future possibilities for growth in the Indian market. Henrik Fisker, Chairman, and CEO of Fisker Inc., states, “India offers exciting opportunities for us, and we plan to grow our brand rapidly over the coming years.”

The Fisker Ocean Extreme Vigyan Edition is poised to make a strong entry into the Indian electric vehicle market, combining luxury, sustainability, and cutting-edge technology. With only 100 units available, Indian consumers will have a unique opportunity to own an exclusive and environmentally conscious SUV that pushes the boundaries of electric mobility. Deliveries are expected to commence by the fourth quarter of 2023, following homologation for the Indian market.
